The printhead is the "heart" of your DTF printer, but it's actually more fragile than we often realize. In many cases, printheads aren't worn out from use—they're ruined by poor maintenance habits.
Below are 9 common operations that cause the most damage to printheads. See if any of these sound familiar?
1. Using "unknown" cleaning agents to wipe the printhead
Some users clean the printhead surface with alcohol, dish soap, industrial solvents, or even regular paper towels. However, these substances either evaporate too quickly, contain unknown chemical ingredients, or leave behind lint and fibers. They can easily corrode nozzle electrodes, clog tiny orifices, or even scratch the protective coating on the printhead surface.
✅ Recommendation: Only use the manufacturer-recommended specialized cleaning fluid and lint-free, anti-static non-woven wipes.
2. Cutting corners with cheap, low-quality cleaning fluids
Poor-quality cleaning fluids often contain impurities, unstable pH levels, or corrosive solvents. Over time, they slowly erode the internal metal structures and coatings of the printhead, leading to electrode oxidation, short circuits, or even complete failure.
✅ Recommendation: Always use certified or manufacturer-approved cleaning fluids. Do not mix different brands or formulations.
3. Handling the printhead without anti-static precautions
Static electricity from the human body is a "silent killer" for printhead circuitry. If you're not wearing an anti-static wrist strap or grounded properly, a single static discharge can instantly damage the ribbon cables or driver board, causing chip failure or circuit shorts.
✅ Recommendation: Before cleaning or removing/installing the printhead, always wear an anti-static wrist strap and ensure the printer chassis is properly grounded. Be extra cautious during dry seasons or when wearing synthetic-fiber clothing.
4. Using high-pressure flushing to "brute-force" unclog the head
Some people use high-pressure air guns or large syringes to forcefully push cleaning fluid through the printhead, hoping to blast away clogs in one go. But this can easily deform the nozzles, crack the internal ceramic layer, or damage the electrodes. At best, it causes nozzle misalignment; at worst, the entire printhead is ruined.
✅ Recommendation: Use low-pressure, slow injection or dedicated ink-purge tools. Adopt a "small amounts, multiple cycles, gentle flushing" approach to dissolve clogs gradually.
5. Cleaning while the printer is powered on—ignoring circuit safety
If you clean the printhead without turning off the power, any liquid splashed onto the ribbon cables or circuit boards can cause short circuits, board damage, or even fire hazards.
✅ Recommendation: Always turn off the main power and unplug the printer before cleaning. Avoid letting any liquid come into contact with electrical components during operation.
6. Soaking the printhead in cleaning fluid for extended periods
Some users submerge the entire printhead in cleaning fluid for two or three days at a time. However, cleaning fluids are corrosive by nature. Soaking for more than 48 hours accelerates seal ring aging, causes internal circuits to become damp and oxidized, and in severe cases, can lead to delamination or detachment of the piezoelectric crystals.
✅ Recommendation: Switch to a "micro-circulation" cleaning method—inject small amounts of cleaning fluid at regular intervals to flush out residual ink through flow, allowing gradual and safer dissolution.
7. Printing with wrinkled or uneven film, causing constant scraping against the printhead
If the printing film is not laid flat or secured properly, it will repeatedly rub against the printhead surface during operation, causing physical scratches. This type of damage is irreversible—at best, it leads to broken lines or blurry prints; at worst, it causes ink leaks or printhead failure.
✅ Recommendation: Ensure the film is flat and wrinkle-free when loading, and apply even pressure with the pressure roller. Regularly check the feed and take-up mechanisms to ensure smooth operation and avoid localized tension issues.
8. Using low-quality ink, or mixing inks from different brands
This is one of the most common pitfalls for many customers—and one of the most fatal causes of printhead damage.

Inks from different manufacturers have completely different chemical compositions. Mixing them can easily trigger chemical reactions, producing precipitates or gel-like substances that directly clog the printhead. Even if you switch inks midway, if you don't thoroughly flush all ink lines, residual old ink will react with the new ink—clogs are almost guaranteed.
✅ Recommendation: Always stick with B btransfer original inks. If you need to switch ink brands, be sure to have a professional thoroughly clean the entire ink delivery system. Never compromise on quality or take shortcuts by mixing inks.
9. Using regular tap water to flush ink lines
This is an extremely dangerous practice! Tap water contains minerals, bleach residues, and various impurities. Once introduced into the ink system, these impurities react chemically with the ink, forming insoluble precipitates. These "hard deposits" will firmly block the printhead and are nearly impossible to salvage.
✅ Recommendation: When flushing ink lines, always use distilled water (or deionized water). Distilled water contains no impurities and will not react with the ink—it is the only safe rinsing medium.
